 What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a technique used to improve and smooth the texture of the facial skin using a chemical solution that causes the skin to blister and eventually peel off. The regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. Thus the term chemical                                 peel is derived.

The results of any chemical peel can be dramatic or minimal- depending on the strength (%) and intensity (pH level) of the peel. Mild skin improvements should be apparent quickly but drastic improvement in texture with just one peel is not usual.

Chemical peels are progressive treatments and a series of 6-8 peels, administered every 10 days allows the skin to heal and a new cellular growth to occur. Over the course of at least 6-8 treatments, a noticeable difference will be seen in fine lines, wrinkles, uneven texture, acne and the effects of sun damage.

                                                                       What Are Your Goals?

Realistic Goals of Chemical Peels

Unrealistic Goals of Chemical Peels

·         Chemical peels can correct sun damage.

·         They can reduce mild scarring.

·         You can experience a reduction or eradication of your wrinkles.

·         Chemical peels can remove excessive / stubborn blackheads.

·         The peel may temporarily reduce excessive skin oils.

·         It cannot remove or reduce the appearance of blood vessels on the skin.

·         It is impossible to truly change pore diameter. However, by removing blackheads, the pores may actually appear less pronounced after treatment.

·         This is not a procedure to get rid of keloidal types of scars.

·         Chemical peels are not a facelift.

·         Will not remove millea (whiteheads)

It is important to understand that a single treatment of a chemical peel is not enough to keep skin clear and younger looking. As any reputable skin care expert will tell you, a daily program is the key to consistent, clearer, younger looking skin.

DO's and DO NOT's of Chemical Peels

DO use a SPF 30 everyday and reapply every 2 hours if you are outside. (Summer & Winter!) (We recommend never tanning or using a tanning bed)

DO use gentle products and cleansers.

DO expect dry, peeling skin. Although you do not have to see flaking in order for a peel to work. Most flaking does come off during your daily cleansing.

DO expect some areas to turn brown. If they turn crusty, (this is perfectly normal) put on a light coating of antibiotic cream and reapply often.  At night, apply the antibiotic cream and place a band-aid appropriate for the spot or saran wrap (if on a chin or other spot that is difficult for a band aid to stay in place).

DO call the office 815-220-0979 immediately if you experience any problems or have any questions.

DO schedule your follow up appointment prior to leaving office.

DO NOT sun tan. NO tanning beds at least 2 weeks before scheduled peel and at least 2 weeks after.

DO NOT use Retin-A or Retinol products at least 3 days before your scheduled treatment and wait at least 3 days to resume using it.

(Many over-the-counter products contain these.  Read your label carefully for Retinol or AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid)

DO NOT get a peel if you have used Accutane in the last 12 months.
